On January 11th, 2021, the 3 leading Thailand e-commerce platforms along with the Department of Business Development and the Department of International Trade Promotion and 20 IPR owners joined together at a press conference for the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) on the internet at the Ministry of Commerce.

Consumer behaviour has moved from offline to online shopping, which has resulted in a dramatic increase in online counterfeiting.  Given this shift, brand owners are placing greater importance on online IPR protection and enforcement. The number of products sold online, as well as the number of counterfeit products offered for sale online, are expected to continue to increase.

The MOU is designed to create an alliance aimed at disabling sales of counterfeit products on online platforms. Additionally, the MOU is designed to provide IPR knowledge and awareness for merchants selling products online.

The MOU commitment between online platforms and IPR owners will create a better and more streamlined process to combat infringers online.  In turn, counterfeits on online platforms will be reduced.

The European Commission praised the signing of the MOU and believes it will create a positive effect.

The S&O IP team attended the event to sign the MOU on behalf of our clients.  We highlighted to the Thai Government Officials that our clients will collaborate to combat online counterfeits on e-commerce platforms, which will benefit Thai consumers.
